Japanese writer Haruki Murakami has requested that his nomination for a new literature prize be withdrawn.
Murakami was named in August as one of 4 finalists for the New Academy Prize in Literature, which was created after the Swedish Academy decided not to award a Nobel Prize in literature this year amid a sexual harassment scandal.
The other nominees for the alternative prize are British-born author Neil Gaiman, Guadeloupe-born Maryse Conde and Vietnam-born Kim Thuy.
Swedish journalists and writers created the prize as a single-year stopgap award.
The organizer of the prize, the New Academy, says Murakami expressed his gratitude for the nomination but he added that he prefers to concentrate on his writing.
The winner will be announced on Oct 12, after the Nobel Prize winners have been named. The award ceremony will be on Dec 9, the day before the Nobel Prize ceremony.
A government push to use the Sydney Opera House's sails to advertise a horse racing event over the wishes of the building's management sparked uproar among many Australians over the commercialization of an iconic landmark.
The A$13 million Everest race, which boasts the world's biggest turf race prize, is due to take place in Sydney this week and organizers are pushing to promote it on the white wings of the Opera House.
Critics say the World Heritage site should be protected from commercialization.
"Sydney's landmarks are not the playthings of those with money, they are ours and let's keep it that way," social activist Mike Woodcock wrote.
The Everest, which ran its inaugural race last year, is run over 1200 metres.
"The version that is going to be displayed is much toned down from what the government was first presented with," the Herald reported NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian as saying.
India's 100th airport, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the northern-eastern state of Sikkim on Monday, is arguably one of the world's most beautiful airports.
The state's airport at Pakyong, some 30km (18 miles) from the state capital, Gangtok, and has been described as an "engineering marvel".
Some 60km from the border with China, the airport is located on top of a hill above Pakyong village at 4,500ft (1,371 metres) above sea level and it's spread across over 201 acres.
The airport is flanked by deep valleys at both ends of the 1.75km-long runway. It has two parking bays and a terminal building, which can handle about 100 passengers at a time.
Difficult topography and hostile weather conditions made this nine-year-long project "extremely challenging and exciting", according to a spokesperson for Punj Lloyd, an Indian company which built the runway.
Engineers say the main challenge was to carry out heavy earthwork construction at the site and lug equipment through narrow mountain roads. The weather -- Sikkim gets monsoon rains from April to September -- hindered work.
The hilly terrain and high seismicity were among some of the other challenges engineers faced on the rocky slopes.
The entire airport, including the runway, has been built on land which was itself created by building an embankment wall as high as 263ft in deep valleys. Punj Lloyd says it is one of the tallest "reinforcement" walls in the world.
Commercial flight operations from Pakyong will begin on 4 October. The airport is expected to boost tourism to Sikkim, which is home to a number of peaks, glaciers and high altitude lakes.
A pair of ruby slippers worth millions that were featured in the movie "The Wizard of Oz" and stolen from a Judy Garland museum 13 years ago have been recovered in Minneapolis, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said last Tuesday.
The FBI said it was asking the public to help identify suspects connected with the original theft and a more recent scheme to extort money from the owners of the red sequined shoes, one of four pairs worn by Judy Garland, who played Dorothy in the 1939 classic.
The slippers were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, during a "smash-and-grab" robbery during the overnight hours of Aug 27 to 28, 2005, that took less than a minute.
After their recovery, the slippers were sent to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, where conservators studying the construction, materials and wear patterns of the slippers were able to confirm that they were the missing pair.
"We were confident this day would eventually come, and we are grateful to the FBI and all those who worked to bring this piece of cinematic treasure out of the shadows and into the light," Grand Rapids Police Chief Scott Johnson said in a written statement.
Garland, a native of Grand Rapids who was born Frances Ethel Gumm, was best known for her role as Dorothy in the film.
"After all, 'There's no place like home,'" the chief said, echoing one of Dorothy's most famous lines.
