【一、外贸英语口语的特点】
外贸英语口语是外经贸专业学生的一门重要课程。该课程通过学习有关迎送外商、询价、讨价还价、付款、装运、包装、保险、检验、索赔、仲裁、代理、补偿贸易、合资企业以及合同签署等外经贸业务各个环节中的洽谈、磋商实例,提高学生的谈判技巧与能力,使学生掌握谈判过程中各个环节运作的程序、要点及语言表达方式。
(一)专业性强
外贸英语口语首先难就难在它的专业性。在很大程度上可以说,不懂外贸专业就不可能做好外贸英语口语工作。俗话说,隔行如隔山。每个专业都有自己的通用词汇和惯用术语,只有真正地去了解外贸专业,了解所从事的生产,才能做好外贸英语业务工作。
(二)时效性强
作为一种特殊的口头交际手段,外贸英语口语的目的在于使用不同语言在拥有不同文化的人们之间进行商业交流,具有传播上的瞬息性、信息上的模糊性和松散性以及言语组织上的即席性等特点,学生必须在有限的时间内同时完成听、分析和表达的任务。
外贸英语是专用英语(即指掌握与某种特定职业、科目或目的相联系的英语),要求这门课有明确的特殊目的(即由于学生将来从事外贸工作的需要,要求达到在本职业范围内使用外贸英语的目的);要有特殊的内容、即专门化内容,要求学生掌握各种外贸的英语词汇、用语语言结构,这与基础英语有很大区别。体现在语体(外贸语域)、文体特色(如正式、句式单一)、修辞特征(如多长句,多被动结构、多非谓语动词修饰限制语)和言语习惯(如外贸合同的特定言语程式)上。
(一)听力要好
听力是最重要的能力之一,国内从事外贸工作的人员大多是在中国人的语言环境下生活。要想如听自己的语言一样听懂英语国家的人说英语,绝非易事。因此强化和提高听力可以大大提高外贸英语口语人员的整体水平。
(二)语音要准
语音是学习英语的基础。学英语时首先要学的就是语音。但是由于我们国家长期在应试制度下培养学生,学生的笔试成绩不错,但一到实用场合下就常常犯错误,最常犯的就是语音错误。可以说英语语音是衡量一个外贸英语口语人员事业成败的重要素质之一。语音未过关,在与外方进行交流时就会增加新的障碍。
1.在讲授内容之前,教师先指示关键的词汇,内容的重点、难点,形象地进行讲解,目的是让学生抓住所讲内容的要点。
2.用案例教学法将本节课涉及的外贸流程专业知识进行概括讲解。
3.提供足够多的国际经贸交际文化和操作惯例。国际经贸交际情景中,存在着一定的通用交际礼仪和交际程式,同时存在着不同国家的商业交际文化,导致跨文化国际经贸交际事实的出现。可以根据录像引入文化差异对于谈判陈述效果的影响,程度地降低由于语言差异和文化冲突造成的交际障碍,同时提高国际经贸业务的效率。
外贸英语口语的学习是由易到难的渐进过程,在学习之初,要模仿对话,学习课本原文外贸英语口语对话的表达方式、语言技巧、对话构成、组织结构,根据情况编撰对话的要点。
外贸英语口语与一般的语言教学不同,除了有扎实的基本功和专业知识以外,口语更注重实践,尤其是接近真实的口语情景现场的模拟实践,即“实战法”。实践的内容包括:课堂讨论、小组活动、角色扮演、情景模拟、即兴对话、主题陈述、讨论会、辩论、商务洽谈、商务角色扮演、模拟创业活动、案例研究活动以及商务研究活动等等。实践的关键在于营造一个接近真实场景的口语环境,从而较快地提高学生的各项素质和临场应变能力,使学生在情景观察和体验中模仿正确行为和交际模式,同时激发英语学习的创造力和想象力,以及团队意识和合作精神。使学生看到并体会到自己主观努力所产生的客观效果,并通过对客观效果的评估,找出自己的不足之处,学习欲望、参与意识增强,应变能力和技巧也会有所提高。
1.加强氛围的营造
在进入正式的教学前,教师应着力为学生营造一种现场气氛。为了体现“现场”的特点,在教学里营造一个接近真实口语对话现场的环境,每堂课都应从营造气氛开始。课前氛围的营造对于克服学生的腼腆和怯场大有裨益。口语课的教学并非一定局限于语音室和普通教室,地点要有临场感。
语言是交际工具,培养学生在真实情境中运用语言的能力。人与人之间,各社会集团之间运用语言进行交际又总是与社会具体情境相联系的,并在一定情境中实现。把实际生活情境搬迁到对话中,使学生好像置身于现实的自然情境和言语交际的环境中。让学生体验到在真实口语对话环境下将要面对的困难和挑战以及采取的应对措施。
所设立的情境大多是发生在一个公司中,业务员与外商就价格、保险等条件进行谈判,要求学生身临其境地用英语对话。这一练习使学生们兴致很高,在对话中不但很好地运用了课中所学的外贸句式、套话、专业词汇等,并能充分发挥出原有的口语水平,使对话更充实、生动。学习者通过自我观察体验,在不同的立场陈述练习中掌握谈判各方互动会话陈述的技巧和语言应用策略。
4.学生在老师指导下的提炼,即通过自我反思和报告,总结出正确的行为特征若干
在口语教学中让学生尽量多说,大胆地说,教师只需要起到组织发言、控制节奏的作用就可以。在口语教学活动中,由于学生水平较低,他们在表达方面有困难。这时教师的作用就是帮助学生学会表达自己。教师可在必要的时候耐心地提示他们该用的单词、句型、语法或例子。
在每个小组表演结束后,针对学生用词造句、讲话方式、表情姿态、讲话内容等进行点评,表扬并鼓励他们的长处,指出不足,以利于他们更好地表现自己。对学生外贸英语口语能力的表现作出客观的评价,一要看学生在心理素质方面的承受能力;二要对学生自信心的培养。
评价的基本项目包括:仪表是否得体;表情是否自然;语速是否得当,是否能被听众所接受;声音是否洪亮和自然;是否与听众交流眼神等。
(二)需要注意的常见问题
1.纠正过多
学生练习口语的时候,经常犯些常识性的错误,一般情况下,英语教师会打断学生的发言并指出其错误。事实上,这样的做法并不一定恰当。学生练习口语的时候本来就缺乏信心,不敢开口。如果不停地打断其话语连贯性,不但会导致他们无法流畅地表达自己的观点,而且更严重的是,会打击他们用英语表达的信心和积极性,从而影响口语教学的顺利进行。笔者认为除非某个学生反复出现同一错误,或是这些错误会影响经贸谈判的效果,在文化方面与外国的风俗习惯格格不入,否则,不多指出学生的差错,更不要中途打断学生的对话,应在学生做完对话后才作出评论。同时要让学生意识到在学习过程中难免会出错。让学生正视出错这个问题,使他们不会对自己所闹的笑话耿耿于怀,克服胆怯心理,增强自信心。让学生明白语言交流的目的是听懂别人在说什么,同时让别人也听懂你在讲些什么,大可不必总考虑语法、词汇方面的准确性,当然也不能离谱到使人产生误解。
由于学生绝大多数是从中学直接升大学,没有经贸行业的工作经验,更没有参加过经贸谈判。对经贸谈判的各个环节很陌生,对产品及其性能、特点不熟悉。因此势必使学生感觉有一定的难度,更不用说用英语来描述这些产品的用途、性能以及就这些产品的价格、付款条件、装运、包装等进行讨价还价。
